11/25/2011 | Al Gore presents to Canadian business on reducing carbon footprint

Business leaders from sectors as diverse as oil and gas, education, banking and manufacturing gathered in Winnipeg recently for a breakfast that saw former U.S. vice-president and Nobel laureate Al Gore speak.

Gore's most recent venture is the Climate Reality Project, an initiative he founded to bring the facts about the climate crisis into the mainstream and engage the public in conversation about how to solve it.

BLJC president Gord Hicks introduced Gore to the 25 leaders gathered at Winnipeg's historic Fort Garry Hotel Nov. 23. The group that included government then settled in for a frank discussion on how Canadian businesses can and must work to reduce their carbon footprint, and to make the move to more sustainable energy sources.

The event was hosted by the Climate Reality Project Canada, of which Hicks is a board member and certified presenter. Worldwide, the Climate Reality Project has five million members and 3,000 presenters. It's guided by one simple truth: The climate crisis is real and we know how to solve it.

This is also Hicks' resounding message.

In addition to founding the Climate Reality Project, Gore has written several bestsellers raising awareness of climate change and exploring solutions, including An Inconvenient Truth, which won a Grammy for Best Spoken Word, and was also produced as a documentary film, which won an Academy Award.

"It is now clear that we face a deepening global climate crisis that requires us to act boldly, quickly, and wisely," said Gore, in An Inconvenient Truth.
