4/21/2011 | BLJC Awarded Top Fundraiser of the Year

On April 17th, Gord Hicks, President, Brookfield LePage Johnson Controls (BLJC), was awarded Top Fundraiser of the Year for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation (CBCF) Leaders for the Cure program.

Gord was recognized at the 4th Annual CBCF’s Ontario Region Volunteer Awards Ceremony held at a luncheon at the Royal York Hotel in Toronto on Sunday afternoon.

Mr. Hicks joined the Leaders for the Cure program in 2009, and through BLJC’s fundraising activities and his support in recruiting other industry executives into the program, over $200,000 has been raised.

BLJC’s largest fundraiser is an annual Charity Casino that takes place in March. This event attracts more than 350 people, including BLJC team members, family and friends, suppliers and clients. The Charity Casino event has been held each of the last two years and has resulted in over $100,000 of proceeds donated to the CBCF.

Much of this event’s success is attributed to the passion and effort that Susan Featherstone, BLJC’s event coordinator puts into planning for the casino. “I’ve started planning for next year’s event already,” Susan says when asked about the casino.

“At BLJC, supporting the communities in which we operate is core to our belief system,” says Gord when asked about his involvement in the Program.

In late 2010, Gord became co-chair of the CBCF’s Leaders for the Cure program which has a goal of raising $1.0 Million annually to contribute to the research and awareness of this devastating disease. The Foundation works collaboratively to fund, support and advocate for:
- Relevant and innovative research,
- Meaningful education and awareness programs,
- Early diagnosis and effective treatment, and
- A positive quality of life for those living with breast cancer.

Their fundraising has enabled the Foundation to allocate millions of dollars in grants for breast cancer projects and services since their inception.
When asked why he is so passionate about his involvement, Gord simply states, “Our Company believes in serving society in a meaningful way—it is part of our CARING culture, and supporting the CBCF in their research and awareness campaign is an extraordinary way that we can achieve that goal!”
