9/7/2010 | BLJC ramps up environmental performance with corporate ISO 14001 commitment

While BLJC has been registered to the environmental management system ISO 14001 at an account level for several years, in 2009 the company stepped up its commitment to the process by registering corporately.

The company is now focused on applying the programs, practices and measurement systems of ISO 14001 consistently across the entire company and all contracts.

The recently hired environmental officer Miranda Goldberg, who is heading up the application and maintenance of the system, says this move demonstrates the company's determination to effect significant change across the board.

“They’re not just meeting the minimum requirements. They’re going (above) and beyond that,” says Goldberg, noting many of the targets that have been set are not easy to reach, indicating the willingness of the company to “really challenge themselves.”

She adds that this activity, along with similarly focused efforts such as the environmental advocacy work by president Gord Hicks, demonstrates the level of commitment to the environmental cause.

Registering at a corporate level of with ISO 14001 moves the company forward to being an industry leader in this regard, she adds.
In keeping with BLJC's environmental commitment, Goldberg says one message she would like employees to keep in mind is this: "Think and treat the earth as if it were a child. Love it, nurture it, protect it, respect it and help it grow to achieve its ultimate potential. We only have one life, one earth, so live it and live it green."

The ISO 14001 management tool enables an organization of any size or type to identify and control the environmental impact of its activities, products or services.

It also supports the continual improvement of environmental performance, as well as provides a systematic way to set, achieve and report on environmental objectives and targets.

Corporate-level BLJC achievements stemming from ISO 14001 to date include:

  • Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) training for project delivery team members attached to design and construction
  • Use of green building materials wherever they are accepted by the client.
  • Elimination of pesticides both corporately and across all client portfolios
  • Adoption of green lighting standards and procurement practices
  • The promotion of green cleaning agents
  • Utilization of hybrid and fuel efficient fleet vehicles
  • Green power purchase program for its Ontario offices
  • and many more initiatives to come.
