News & Announcements3/22/2011 | BLJC staff raise $55,000 for breast cancer research BLJC’s annual charity casino raised more than $55,000 for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation (CBCF) earlier this March, eclipsing the $47,000 raised in 2010. The CBCF is the leading national volunteer-based organization in Canada dedicated to creating a future without breast cancer. The foundation funds and advocates for, relevant and innovative research, meaningful education and awareness programs, early diagnosis and effective treatment, and a positive quality of life for those living with breast cancer. Over 500 tickets were sold for the March 9 event hosted at the Hilton Suites in Markham. “Everybody had a really great time and they love doing things when they know it’s for charity,” says Featherstone. Despite blustery weather, the casino was filled with fun and excitement as attendees played games, listened to jazz and bid in auctions. Attendees raised money by purchasing a $25 ticket and registration kit that contained 1,000 fake casino dollars to be spent playing the tables and on a live auction. Funds were also raised during a silent auction (with real money) and through corporate sponsorship and donations. There was $22,000 in prizes to be won at the auctions, meaning everyone had a chance to go home with a prize, while raising money for breast cancer research. The auctions featured many things including tickets for golf courses, concerts and sporting events, gadgets, electronics, jewellery and gift certificates. Most of the income came from corporate sponsorship from companies like Deloitte and Govan Brown. “We’re very appreciative of Deloitte’s generosity for sponsoring the event,” says Featherstone. Govan Brown co-hosted the casino by contributing funds and helping to find donations for the auctions, as well. Banking, auctioning, registration and set up were all taken care of by 16 BLJC volunteers. Featherstone says, “they did a great job and we couldn’t have done it without their assistance.” |
