8/12/2010 | BLJC team members join community in island cleanup

BLJC team members joined the community in restoring a significant natural environment to a more pristine condition recently.

It was the Nova Scotia group’s first time participating in the McNabs Island cleanup — and it won’t be the last, says regional director for design and project services Adrian Munroe.

The locally well-known effort to rid the island’s sandy shoreline of rubbish is organized annually by the volunteer-based, non-profit Friends of McNabs Island Society.

About 70 people headed to the island, located in Halifax Harbour, for the full-day cleanup. BLJC’s Robert Lambur, Jim Luker, Stephen Thomas and Munroe were among them. More team members had signed on but could not attend on the rain date, which is when the cleanup ultimately took place.

Munroe estimates the BLJC team collected 15 to 20 garbage bags of items, which were sorted into trash and recyclables and loaded onto a boat docked at the island.

Home to a provincial park, federal park reserve and the Fort McNab national historic site, the island is promoted by the society as a nature park and outdoor classroom. Its natural beauty was not lost on the BLJC clean-up crew who enjoyed the view while on lunch break.

It was a great time, Munroe says, adding the team enjoyed working with community members on an environmentally-friendly task.

Participating in the event reinforces BLJC’s corporate social responsibility program, for which Munroe is the Nova Scotia region’s ambassador.

The program fosters team-building as BLJC staff engage the community and support environmental and sustainable initiatives.

Most of BLJC’s team members in Nova Scotia are based in the Halifax area but a number of them work remotely on multiple contracts.

Participating in events and activities through the corporate social responsibility program brings them together.

“Rolling out these programs and engaging people is forming more of a regional team for us,” Munroe says.

Team members are looking forward to another event planned under the social responsibility program. On Aug. 22, staff will take part in Habitat for Humanity’s renovation of a homeless shelter for men.

Munroe says they will also be back for next year’s island cleanup.
