12/22/2010 | BLJC treats youngsters to a movie

Santa Claus came to town early for youngsters whose loved ones work at BLJC in the Greater Toronto Area.

The company held its annual children’s Christmas party Dec. 4 at the Cineplex Odeon theatres in Richmond Hill. Attendees had the option to take in the movie Tangled or watch Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1.

“We had close to 400 attendees,” says Mary Lou Horton, executive assistant, noting 329 people initially registered to see Tangled and 133 signed on for Harry Potter.

Prior to settling in for the show, Santa Claus and his elf mingled with the children and gave them candy. BLJC provided snacks and refreshments and gave each child a $25 gift card for Mastermind Toys.

The idea for holding the Christmas party at the cinema was inspired by BLJC president Gord Hicks. BLJC rented the space for the morning to accommodate children and their relatives.

“Every year it has gotten bigger,” Horton says.

“Companies don’t do this anymore. People are so appreciative you’re entertaining their children and the kids are so excited about Christmas. It’s a great activity,” she adds.

Peter Rombos, a building performance specialist with BLJC’s energy and sustainability group, took on the role of Santa at the party. Meanwhile the niece of IT administrator Julie Bradshaw played the elf.

“It has really taken off,” Horton says.
